Jakarta: The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecast El Niño to persist into early 2027, prolonging and intensifying Indonesia’s dry season.

“The peak of the 2026 dry season is expected to occur in August, covering 48.84% of Indonesia’s land area, and in September, covering 25.41% of the country’s land area,” BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani said during a broadcast of Metro TV’s Metro Hari Ini on Thursday, July 30, 2026.

The BMKG also highlighted six provinces at high risk of forest and land fires, namely Riau, South Sumatra, Jambi, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Papua.

To mitigate the extreme weather, the agency has implemented several precautionary measures, including conducting weather modification operations in the six high-risk provinces.
